Bishops to Consecrate Canada to Immaculate Heart of Mary

Saturday, July 1st is Canada Day and this year is special as we celebrate 150 years since Confederation. Canada remains one of the most beautiful and peaceful countries on earth and there is much to celebrate. Personally, I usually feel kind of sad, because I feel this country has lost its soul and has not lived up to the promise of what it could have been. What is good and beautiful stands in sharp contrast to diminishing freedoms and aggressive secularism.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has chosen the occasion of this anniversary to consecrate our country to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and I think we need protection now more than ever. They have invited all bishops to do so and for all of us to join in that prayer on Canada Day. The consecration will be repeated when the bishops gather for their Plenary in September.

Here is the shorter version of the prayer, which all the faithful are encouraged to pray:

Mary our Mother,

may the Cross of your Son,

planted on Canadian soil

and in Canadian hearts,

be known as the Tree of Life,

whose fruit is visible

and available to all

in the garden of this world.

We place our country Canada

in the sanctuary of your Holy Heart

for we know that there we will find

Jesus, who lives and reigns

with the Father in the unity

of the Holy Spirit, one God,

forever and ever.

Amen.

Prayer cards are available from the CCCB, so hopefully our parishes will distribute them widely.
